How much should someone charge for creating a logo for me?

It’s for a Kids program I’m trying to start. He stated he would charge me $40 after he did the logo. Is that a fair deal and do I have to go through with paying him?

$40 sounds very fair. I think once you approve and he gives you a couple chances to make minor changes that this should be acceptable.

$40 dollars for a logo is very, very cheap, considering that a professional, experienced graphic designer will usually charge that much or more PER HOUR. A design firm or agency can easily charge a few thousand dollars but you can see how much a well-designed logo can mean for a brand and an organization (ie Nike). So is it a fair deal? Well, what is he providing for you exactly? Camera-ready artwork that works for all mediums or just an illustration? What is his background and experience? Is he taking into account your program’s needs and branding? Is it going to be legally viable?

There are many questions to ask and the least you could do is look at his portfolio and see what he is capable of and if you like his work. If you hire him, you still have to pay him regardless. You can also search around for other designers and compare. You’ll at least get a feel for who else is out there and may learn a thing or two about logo design.

Yes - actually you should pay $20 up front and another $20 when you approve the logo. If this person is any good then you are getting quite a deal!

I would charge you around $50 (depending on the size of the project - might have to charge hourly if the job was going to take alot of concentration) and I would give you a few examples to look at and then finish the logo and make it perfect for you. You would get a cd with the logo in at least 3 different formats. (one for the web and 2 for print)

I would say $40 is a really good deal…only if you are happy with the design…if the design is no good and you don’t want it then you shouldn’t have to pay for it.

Most good logo designers would probably charge 3-4 times this much….you get what you pay for!!

I am a logo designer in the uk and charge £100 for a useable logo. I would put forward a number of designs and work with you to come up with something you were happy with…I hope this helps.

$40 is dirt cheap. Most people I know that do logos charge well over $250 on a basic logo and the more time consuming one is the more expensive it is.

I’m not sure where this $40 came from but that is extremely low. If that is what you were quoted take it and run! An artist who is fairly new to the design field will make anywhere from $100 to $200 for a logo. A professional who designs or redisigns a logo can make as much as $10,000. That is considering the size of the company (How much it earns each year) and how many items this logo will be used on. Letterhead, t-shirts, pens, stress-balls, posters, etc.
The first logo I did was for a self-owned company (one guy) who wanted the logo for business cards and for the side of his van and I was paid $100 for that.
