Is it normal for a buffet clarinet to have the logo stamped on the instrument and not engraved?

Meatchuck asked:

I just bought a buffetclarinet off of ebay for quite cheap. The logo is a normal logo and it has the logo and intermediate stamped underneath the logo on it. I’m a little concerned because the logo is stamped and not engraved. I’m an unexperienced buffet buyer, but I wanted a buffet clarinet since my other clarinet was a plastic selmer and definitely wanted to move up from that since I’ve been playing for several years now.

Well I am not an expert clarinet player but i do know a few things and I am not too concerned with the logo being stamp i think it is quite normal since a stamp does not affect the interior sound passage way. If the logo were engraved then it would possibly alter the tonal quality of the clarinet and may make it slightly sharp or flat. Of course you should check that with a tuner. Unless if your clarinet is altered to concert pitch and then you dont have to transpose the instrument a whole step like you probably used to. If you still are concerend I suggest you ask your clarinet proffesor or band director whoever it is. Keep up the good work playing clarinet!!

I’m assuming that your concerned that you may not have actually purchased a buffet. I would take it to your band director and have them take a look at it. I was a band director for 20 yrs I seem to recall Buffet engraving their name into the instrument. Maybe they don’t on the intermediate but do on the professional. You could also contact Selmer and have them trace the seriel number and model number to make sure it’s a Buffet. I hope you didn’t get taken for a ride.

Older Buffet models did have an engraved logo with gold inlay. The newer models have a gold stamp. I’m not sure why they changed, but the logo does serve a purpose.
When the clarinets are made they are tested to find the best sound for each individual horn. The stamps on the barrell anf bell should be lined up with the ones on the other two joints in order to achieve the best sound.
