How do you design a logo without having the white background?

Mrs. D! asked:

I know how to design a logo in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, but I do not know how to save it so that the logo will not have a background. I want to be able to put the logo on another document or creation with just the image itself.

I have tried selecting the transparent background and when I open the logo to put on another document, it has a white background.

HELP PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Photoshop, choose Save as… and pick ‘CompuServe GIF’ as the format.
When the ‘Indexed Color’ window pops up, make sure ‘Transparency’ is selected. Double check the other options and make sure your picture still looks good and click OK, and OK again
